Food For Pit Bulls And An Akita
I have two pit bulls, and one foster Akita. The pit bulls are Sirius, who is 5 1/2, and Rigel, who is likely between 1 year and 18 months. The Akita, Bear, is 14 months old.
I feed Taste of the Wild (any type), Wellness Core, and Solid Gold Barking at the Moon. I did not have any of these dogs as young puppies, so I have not fed special puppy food. Years ago, Sirius would get Iams or Nutro Max, and later, various Natural Balance varieties.
I wanted something that was grain-free, had no by-products, and was high in protien. The latest addition, Rigel, seems to be allergic to both corn and wheat, so I won't be switching back to a non-grain-free food. He's been on Barking at the Moon since his arrival here, and has been doing just fine. My vet only recommends food in cases where a prescription diet is needed; since what they stock, Science Diet, is made with corn, she is not suggesting that for Rigel.
I can buy Wellness Core and the Solid Gold at my local Petco. Taste of the Wild is stocked at Jones Feed and Tack in Las Vegas, NV. The Taste of the Wild is less expensive, but the Petco has more convenient hours.
One thing I will note is that, while Sirius is a garbage disposal that can and will eat anything, Rigel and Bear both have somewhat more sensitive stomachs. Bear in particular will have diarrhea if I pick up a bag of Taste of the Wild and don't slowly transition him over. He doesn't have this issue with Wellness Core or the Solid Gold, so it may be that the other food is harder on his system.
For these, I never follow the quanity recommendations on the bag. Bear gets 4 1/2 cups of food a day, as he's still growing, and Rigel gets about 4 cups, as he's also still growing, and is much more active than Bear. (He's also only been here a month, and initially had Giardia.) Sirius, who is 55 lbs, stays in a great body condition at just a cup and a half per day.
